Effective security for cloud-hosted web applications requires full visibility into the environment in which the apps live and the potential exposure to vulnerabilities — and to do so consistently, while proactively monitoring for attacks without causing delays in application development and delivery. Cloud adoption means that a focus on perimeter security is not sufficient and may even be obstructive, because it can impact application performance and availability. As the volume of unstructured data created and used continues to increase rapidly, organizations are faced with challenges around data storage. In response, many new technologies — specifically objectbased storage, software-defined storage, all-flash arrays, and cloud-based storage services — are experiencing rapid adoption. Yet object-based storage has been limited by the need to rewrite existing file-based applications — a prospect that is costly and requires more manpower than is practical for many organizations. Cloudian offers both an object storage platform and more recently an enterprise file services product. When deployed together, Cloudian's products are designed to consolidate file and object data into a single repository and can enable organizations to manage environments that span the cloud as well as on-premises.

The Edge Completes the Cloud Edge computing delivers the decentralized complement to today’s hyperscale cloud and legacy data centers. To maximize application potential and user experience, enterprise architects and technology innovation leaders need to plan distributed computing solutions. Enabling this thinking is that although the cloud is becoming mainstream, that does not imply that all workloads will be placed in the cloud during the next decade or so. Technical incompatibilities, decades of embedded business logic in mainframe applications, government regulations and simple economics all conspire to keep some workloads out of the cloud, driving us toward a hybrid multi cloud future.

The pressures of speed, efficiency, and cost will push more applications and data outside the trusted network and into a service provider’s clouds, where those benefits can be realized. The growth of cloud services and movement of sensitive data between private and public clouds means that those services will become increasingly valuable as targets of attack. As enterprises cloud-enable their operations, gaps in control, visibility, identity, and security are the most likely paths to data breaches.

Use of cloud computing services continues to grow rapidly as organizations migrate business applications and data to cloud-based software, platform and infrastructure services. Gartner estimates 2017 will see growth of 18% in spending on public cloud services and that cloud adoption will infuence more than 50% of IT spending through 2020. Deloitte Global predicts that by the end of 2022 more than half of all IT spending will go to IT-as-a-service providers. In the 2016 edition of this survey, 56% of the security professionals responding said limitations on access to collect incident response data and evidence for forensic analysis was a key challenge to securing the cloud. Sixty-two percent said they were concerned about unauthorized access by outsiders, and 59% said they worried about access by other cloud tenants. Of the 10% who reported being breached, half blamed stolen credentials or compromised accounts.

In response to the federal government’s Cloud First initiative, agencies are moving to the cloud at an accelerated rate - moving on-premise applications, data and workloads to cloud infrastructure and adopting SaaS technologies like Salesforce, ServiceNow and Workday. What many in government have found is that integration and looking for government integration solutions has emerged as a stumbling block that has prevented government from realizing many of the benefits of moving to the cloud. This is because while a growing number of applications adopted by government are in the cloud, the underlying integration technologies connecting these applications are still based on-premise, meaning that government IT teams still have to spend time provisioning and maintaining infrastructure to ensure that their middleware doesn’t become a performance bottleneck for their applications. Join us for a conversation with MuleSoft CISO Kevin Paige on why cloud integration is key for agencies to succe

With the exploding adoption of software-as-a-service (SaaS) applications, enterprise IT is fundamentally changing. While on-demand services provide tremendous ROI, they also introduce new challenges that must be overcome to truly capitalize on their potential. Identity management problems such as controlling who is granted access to which applications and data and how to control access to these applications leveraging on premise directories such as Active Directory, have become increasingly important. Single Sign-On and user management solutions that are optimized for the cloud are necessary to help address these challenges. This whitepaper presents the eight biggest identity and access management (IAM) challenges associated with adopting and deploying cloud and SaaS applications, and discusses best practices for addressing each of them.
