Our industry has made numerous technological advances designed to protect homeowners, businesses and electrical workers. That makes every fatal electrocution in the home all the more distressing. Between 2010 and 2013, the U.S. saw an estimated average of 48 electrocution fatalities associated with consumer products per year, with large and small electric appliances chief among them1. Tragedies like these can be avoided, especially when the ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) technologies needed to prevent dangerous events are readily available. As the principle NEMA representative at the National Electrical Code (NEC) Code-Making Panel Two, I saw public input asking for increased GFCI protection for the home during the 2017 code cycle. The code panel expanded the GFCI requirement for facilities other than dwelling units as part of section NEC 210.8(B). However, residential standards improvements were sidelined.

Businesses are overwhelmed with data; it’s a blessing and a curse. A curse because it can overwhelm traditional approaches to storing and processing it. A blessing because the data promises business insight that never existed earlier. The industry has spawned a new term, “big data,” to describe it. Now, IT itself is overwhelmed with its own big data. In the press to roll out new services and technologies—mobility, cloud, virtualization—applications, networks, and physical and virtual servers grow in a sprawl. With them comes an unprecedented volume of data such as logs, events, and flows. It takes too much time and resources to sift through it, so most of it lies unexplored and unexploited. Yet like business data, it contains insight that can help us solve problems, make decisions, and plan for the future.

All survey respondents were based in the U.S. and have influence over backup/disaster recovery purchase decisions. This e-book will explore the impact of downtime and data loss on IT departments for small and midsize businesses.

Scale events — like online sales and digital product launches — present great revenue opportunities, but they also present large risks to your business. Whether you are a retailer preparing for Black Friday and Cyber Monday, or a digital vendor launching a new service, your brand is both at its most visible and its most vulnerable during these scale events. Many more customers visit your site over a short period of time, raising the potential for resource constraints and discovery of software bugs. Information about issues spreads quickly via social media and news outlets. And, your customers typically spend more per transaction, so every lost order has a greater negative impact on your bottom line. Site reliability engineering (SRE) can help you better prepare for scale events through an iterative cycle of data-driven improvement.

In just one city block you might find half a dozen artisan coffee shops, independent diners and high-end restaurants all jostling for customers. Consequently it’s no surprise to find that customer loyalty programs sit at the heart of so many eateries’ business strategies. For cafés, diners and restaurants, repeat business is an imperative. One-off bookings are great, but it’s the regulars who sustain business. Frequent visitor stamps, booking priority, a free glass of wine, invites to one-off events – all these strategies keep customers coming back for more. But how hard are these programs really working for businesses?
