Security is the foundation of digital business innovation. It’s a bold claim; one that hasn’t always been accepted as truth. In the not so distant past, digital security was seen as a cost center. Those days are gone. Security is essential to the success of any digital business. If there is one thing you can always count on, however, it’s that security-related incursions are inevitable. And it’s news to no one to say that these disruptions can have dire consequences beyond downtime. Security breaches erode trust and damage reputation.

To succeed in today’s competitive reality, businesses need to free themselves from the limitations of legacy IT infrastructure. The days of purchasing hardware and maintaining massive data centers to run IT must come to an end. Managing and maintaining your infrastructure is simply too expensive. A recent Gartner survey found that more than 80 percent of CIOs consider Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) to be a viable option and 10 percent of CIOs already consider it to be their default choice for infrastructure. Utilizing an infrastructure with an elastic, pay-as-you-go service model not only reduces costs and worries, but also frees IT organizations to innovate in ways that will enhance business growth.

In today’s digital economy, consumer products (CP) companies face pressures from all sides. Consumers wield great power based on easy access to information about products, pricing, and availability. The barriers of entry for new players with the “next big product idea” are lower than ever. At the same time, channel partners, from big retailers to Amazon, are expanding their own private-label businesses. Added to all that, tremendous volatility persists in the basic costs of doing business, from raw materials, to labor, to shipping, and beyond.

To compete in today’s world, business leaders are placing increased demands on IT. Unfortunately, many IT departments are not able to deliver future innovation with their current infrastructure, applications and processes. To meet these demands, IT must digitally transform the enterprise through the adoption of cloud native practices, allowing them to both optimize and transform their existing infrastructure and applications. Recent Avanade research supports this thinking, finding that 88% of senior IT decision-makers believe that IT modernization is crucial to addressing the emerging requirements of the digital business1 . On the upside, those surveyed also indicated that by modernizing their IT infrastructures they expect to deliver real business results, such as boosting annual revenue by 14%, while at the same time reducing business operating costs by 13%1 . For many, this sounds like a winning strategy but what does it mean to adopt cloud native approaches, and how does it impact

Old Dutch Foods, known for its broad selection of snack foods in the midwest United States and Canada, was struggling to get the right products to the right places at the right time. Its data center included outdated physical servers, and batch processing meant that inventory would not be updated until the end of the day as opposed to real time. In addition, recovering from power outages and disk failures could frequently take up to two weeks. To modernize its data center, Old Dutch Foods invested in EMC Converged Infrastructure. The fast and easy deployment of two VCE VBlock® systems running JD Edwards, MS Exchange, mobile device apps, and operation of a backup site with replicated applications and data. This enhanced the IT department's responsiveness to the business, allowed them to shift to real-time inventory, and reduced CapEx and OpEx costs. Operations were simplified by reducing person-hours needed for infrastructure maintenance by 75 percent.

To do this means moving away from what has traditionally been viewed as a back-end operation and cost center to what is now being viewed as a brand-focused profit center. The primary driver of this sea change is engaged and empowered consumers, who want to get the answers to their questions anytime, anywhere, on any device they choose.

Several years ago, a transformation in IT began to take place; a transformation from an IT-centric view of technology to a business-centric view of technology that Forrester refers to as business technology (BT). This transformation has a profound impact on the role of the CIO. The CIO must now view himself or herself as a business enabler. He or she must focus on continuously aligning with business objectives, improving delivery capability to support business processes that bring new products and services to market more quickly, fostering innovation, and reducing costs through improved performance.
