Asian ICT infrastructure investment is exploding as businesses review and modernise their data-centre architectures to keep up with the service demands of a growing and increasingly sophisticated population. Demand for cloud services, particularly to support big-data analytics initiatives, is driving this trend. Frost & Sullivan, for example, believes the Asia-Pacific cloud computing market will grow at 28.4 percent annually through 2022. Despite this growth, many businesses are also rapidly realising that public cloud is not the best solution for every need as theydo not always offer the same level of visibility, performance, and control as on-premises infrastructure. This reality is pushing many companies towards the middle ground of hybrid IT, in which applications and infrastructure are distributed across public cloud and self-managed data centre infrastructure. Read about Medical company Mutoh and how it took advantage of the latest technology.

Enterprises are looking to innovations like big data, cloud-based services and mobile apps to improve decision making and accelerate business results. But legacy IT implementations—independent compute, storage and networking platforms, veneered with a hypervisor— often can’t deliver on the increased agility, scalability and price performance demands of this new era of IT.

To succeed in today’s competitive reality, businesses need to free themselves from the limitations of legacy IT infrastructure. The days of purchasing hardware and maintaining massive data centers to run IT must come to an end. Managing and maintaining your infrastructure is simply too expensive. A recent Gartner survey found that more than 80 percent of CIOs consider Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) to be a viable option and 10 percent of CIOs already consider it to be their default choice for infrastructure. Utilizing an infrastructure with an elastic, pay-as-you-go service model not only reduces costs and worries, but also frees IT organizations to innovate in ways that will enhance business growth.

The value of conventional on-premises servers is eroding. As with all decay, it starts slowly and declines steadily. Bits and pieces of the physical server market are peeling off as businesses turn away from conventional data center and IT closet deployments in favor of cloud-based infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS). And there’s no shortage of IaaS; hosting and service-provider companies are flooding the market with low-cost access to hosted servers. The challenge for adopting businesses is leveraging hosted assets that guarantee data security and integrity with fine-grained levels of adjustable capacity, high performance and price predictability.

CTOs, CIOs, and application architects need access to datacenter facilities capable of handling the broad range of content serving, Big Data/analytics, and archiving functions associated with the systems of engagement and insight that they depend upon to better service customers and enhance business outcomes. They need to enhance their existing datacenters, they need to accelerate the building of new datacenters in new geographies, and they need to take greater advantage of advanced, sophisticated datacenters designed, built, and operated by service providers. IDC terms this business and datacenter transformation the shift to the 3rd Platform.

IDC Retail Insights defines omni-channel merchandise optimization as the set of technologies, data assets, skills, processes, and management intent required to develop and maintain sets of targeted and localized offers that best satisfy important business objectives. These goals include customer satisfaction, customer lifetime value, and category, channel, and corporate performance. By "offers," IDC Retail Insights means the broad set of attributes that characterize assortments, products, services, prices, utility, and convenience that match customers' buying criteria and shopping behaviors. Targeted and localized offers present a compelling "choice set" that satisfies and delights consumers. As the volume of unstructured data created and used continues to increase rapidly, organizations are faced with challenges around data storage. In response, many new technologies — specifically objectbased storage, software-defined storage, all-flash arrays, and cloud-based storage services — are experiencing rapid adoption. Yet object-based storage has been limited by the need to rewrite existing file-based applications — a prospect that is costly and requires more manpower than is practical for many organizations. Cloudian offers both an object storage platform and more recently an enterprise file services product. When deployed together, Cloudian's products are designed to consolidate file and object data into a single repository and can enable organizations to manage environments that span the cloud as well as on-premises.

Digital transformation on the 3rd Platform continues to present unprecedented opportunities and challenges for enterprise networks and the IT professionals who operate them. Indeed, the requirements associated with cloud computing have already reverberated through datacenter networking, with software-defined networking (SDN) arising as an architectural approach that provided the network with the agility and responsiveness that it lacked previously but has come to require. Now, the focus is turning to how the WAN must change to accommodate the requirements of cloud applications and services. Fortunately, technologies such as hybrid WAN and software-defined WAN (SD-WAN) are coming to the rescue, giving enterprise IT the means to allow the WAN to meet these challenges directly.

Datacenters are the factories of the Internet age, just like warehouses, assembly lines, and machine shops were for the industrial age. Over the course of the past several years, riding the wave of modernization, datacenters have become the heart and soul of the financial industry, which each year invests over $480 billion in datacenter infrastructure of hardware, software, networks, and security and services.
