With so much talk about big data and the possibilities it can offer, the truth behind what big data is—and what it can do for businesses—can be hard to determine. However, according to Dr. Barry Devlin of 9sight Consulting, the truth behind all the talk is not hard to see, provided that organizations are willing to return to the principles of good data management processes. According to Dr. Devlin’s white paper “The Big Data Zoo—Taming the Beasts”, data is still data, whether big or small. It needs to be managed effectively if organizations want to be gain value from it. Although big data may present special challenges for IT organizations, the principles of data management haven’t changed.

Business users need a simple but powerful way to navigate through data and find the insights to make timely, critical business decisions. Unfortunately, many users have become frustrated at their inability to quickly access and analyze the information they require. This data typically includes a combination of personal and corporate data locked in various enterprise systems. It exists in different formats and can be hard to analyze, change or share — making it difficult for people to get fast answers to business questions.

The evolution from business connectivity to business mobility is unlike previous compute transitions because it redefines how people work. Historically, companies provided access to the necessary applications and data from corporate-issued devices such as laptops and desktops in controlled operating environments. This tightly integrated environment tethered workers to a specific device and operating system, and even sometimes to a location. Mobility breaks these shackles and enables workers to change the way they work.

The data center has gone through many major evolutionary changes over the past several decades, and each change has been defined by major shifts in architectures. The industry moved from the mainframe era to client/server computing and then to Internet computing. In 2011, another major shift began: the shift to a virtual data center. This has been the primary driver in enabling customers to transition to the cloud and ultimately IT as a service. The shift to a virtual data center will be the single biggest transition in the history of computing. It will reshape all the major data center tiers: applications, storage, servers and the network.

Statistics are the underpinning of how Optimizely’s customers use data to make decisions. We use experiments to understand how changes we make affect the performance of our online experiences. To do this, we need a framework for evaluating how likely those changes are to have an impact, positive or negative, on a business over time. To run great experiments, investing in an understanding of statistics is one of the most important skills you can develop. Statistics provide inference on your results and help to determine whether you have a winning variation. Using statistical values to decide leads to stable, replicable results you can bet your business on. Lack of understanding can lead to errors and unreliable outcomes from your experiments.

Built for continuous availability in mission-critical data center environments, Cisco NX-OS has set the standard for resiliency, extensibility, efficiency, and virtualization. Now it has added programmability and automation to that list, too. For this episode of TechWiseTV, Robb Boyd talks to two foremost experts in this, the world's most deployed operating system in the data center. They discuss all the exciting changes Cisco has made to NX-OS and, more importantly, how organizations can take full advantage of this automation opportunity. This is truly a deep dive into the full potential of all the components that compose Open NX-OS.

Organizations that invest in proprietary applications and data for competitive advantage in their industries only succeed by making those investments available to employees, customers, and partners that drive revenue and opportunity. Securing those investments requires a fresh perspective as the types of devices accessing the cloud datacenter are changing rapidly and new workloads, such as VDI desktops, are appearing more regularly alongside server workloads. These changes alter the potential attacks and potential threats to datacenters whose security primarily stands firm at the perimeter, however, within the data center the security is weak. By combining VMware NSX with the AirWatch Tunnel and/or VMware Horizon View, organizations are able to bridge the device to datacenter security gap in a way that both increases the overall security of the cloud datacenter and makes it far simpler to manage security through defining and delegating application and services to specific users. The four pillars of computing — cloud, mobility, social, and analytics — are driving new levels of network innovation in datacenter networks. These forces are now buffeting the datacenter along with virtualization and the Internet of Things (IoT), resulting in sweeping changes in traffic patterns that expose the limitations of traditional networks and their operational models. To become a resource rather than a bottleneck to overall datacenter performance, the network must deliver not just exceptional performance and scalability but also unprecedented automation and orchestration that can yield agility, flexibility, and service velocity. This Technology Spotlight examines these key trends and discusses the role that Cisco's Application Centric Infrastructure (ACI) plays in addressing these ongoing challenges for enterprise IT and network managers.

The state of threat intelligence in the information security community is still very immature. Many organizations are still combating threats in a reactive manner, only learning what they're dealing with, well...when they're dealing with it. There is a wealth of information in the community, and many organizations have been gathering data about attackers and trends for years. How can we share that information, and what kinds of intelligence are most valuable? In this presentation, we'll start with a brief overview of AlienVault's Open Threat Exchange™ (OTX), and then we'll discuss attack trends and techniques seen in enterprise networks today, with supporting data from AlienVault OTX. We'll also take a look at some new models for collaboration and improving the state of threat intelligence going forward.

When it comes to design patterns, the battle between push and pull has been ongoing since the start. Both models have their place. But the authors of this IBM® Redbooks® Point-of-View article, including IBM WebSphere® VP Jerry Cuomo, argue that in many situations, pushing data to users as it changes can consume far fewer resources than a conventional pull pattern.

Businesses face an increasingly complex set of threats to their Web applications—from malware and advanced persistent threats (APTs) to disgruntled employees and unintentional data leaks. Although there is no single security measure than can prevent all threats, there are some that provide broad-based mitigation to a number of threats. The use of SSL encryption and digital certificate-based authentication is one of them. Changes in the way we deliver services, the increasing use of mobile devices, and the adoption of cloud computing compounded by the ever-evolving means of stealing information and compromising services leave Web applications vulnerable to attack. In this chapter, we turn our attention to the combined risk of losing data and losing customer trust.
