Rapid innovation, disruptive competition, and intensive investments in new technologies tend to characterize the North American marketplace. Thus, it stands to reason that chief financial officers in North America are more involved in strategic decision-making than CFOs in other regions, and that they leverage technology to automate routine operations so they can focus on strategic concerns.

Decision-making is at the core of all business activity, as executives set strategy and manage operations by weighing a vast array of factors to arrive at the desired balance of risk and reward. The enormous growth of companies' size and operations in recent years-particularly across borders-is making this process increasingly complex. It is cause for alarm, then, that executives themselves perceive the quality of decision-making at their companies as mixed at best.

When Information Revolution1 was published in 2006, no Chinese based companies were among the top 10 largest companies by market capitalization. Apple didn’t sell phones. Facebook was something college kids used to connect with their friends. Back then, we talked a lot about the amount of data coming in and faster processing speed. What we believed then remains true today: Data, and the decision-making process, can be moved throughout the organization to equip every decision maker (automated, line worker, analyst, executive) to make the best choices. By operationalizing analytics, organizations can identify and quantify both opportunity and risk. Information Revolution highlighted SAS’ Information Evolution Model, which helps organizations understand how they interact with their information and how to extract more value from it through analytics.

How does marketing compare to a game of pool? Sometimes you hit a good shot – 9 ball corner pocket – like when you’ve marketed a product and your customer purchases it. But sometimes your shot misses, and you knock in your opponent’s ball. You could even knock your ball into the pocket, but mistakenly knock your opponent’s ball into a different pocket at the same time. Of course, you can’t predict everything in a game of pool – or in marketing. A campaign may reveal a weakness that sends customers scuttling to a competitor. A new product can cannibalize an existing product line. Customers could leave one of your legacy product lines to consume one of your newly launched products – perhaps causing you to lose some revenue. But unlike pool, it’s hard to observe and measure with the naked eye what’s happening in marketing. The way to improve your chances of success is to build a solid measurement plan that lets you define and measure diagnostic metrics.

Imagine that you are in a meeting with several department heads discussing issues around enrollment. As people begin to share their thoughts, you quickly realize that each person in the room is working from conflicting information – and everyone thinks their information is correct. The group spends most of the meeting arguing over whose data and reports are correct rather than understanding the problem and making decisions. Sound familiar? When organizations have their data fragmented across many systems and departments, these situations are all too common. Without a single, trusted source of truth and easyto- use tools to interpret and understand the data, conversations are limited by everyone’s departmental perspectives and resources.

Better health care at lower costs, for everyone – how do health care providers get there? Understanding the gaps in patient care, patient needs, and the geographic distribution of the patient population are important elements to consider when making decisions about improving the quality of care and reducing its costs. To effectively analyze gaps in patient care, the data needs to be in a single place or system. However, in many organizations, data is spread across a myriad of spreadsheets and database systems. Data not organized for visual exploration and coherent analysis isn’t useful for decision making. Hence the need for visually appealing and scalable analytical tools to help organizations be more efficient, effective and economically successful.

Location analytics is the process of integrating geographical data into business intelligence (BI) and analytics-led decision making. Location analytics creates meaningful insight from relationships found in geospatial data to solve a broad variety of business and social problems. Location data is found everywhere – with an item or a device, in a conversation or behavior, in machines or sensors, tied to a customer or competitor, attached to a database record or recorded from vehicles or other moving objects. Organizations want to take advantage of location data to improve decisions, create better customer engagement and experiences, reduce risks and automate business processes.

For 20 years running, SAS has landed a coveted spot on Fortune’s 100 Best Companies to Work For list. Our HR department plays a critical role in keeping current employees engaged and productive as well as anticipating and preparing for future workforce needs. How? One reason is our use of data and analytics to drive HR decision making. It would be easy to assume other companies see the value of analytics; however, a Deloitte survey found 75 percent of HR leaders rate analytics as a priority, yet only 8 percent say their HR organization has a strong analytics capability. I had the pleasure of meeting David Harcourt, Associate Manager of Employee Insights at Yum! Brands when he spoke at the Analytics Experience 2016 conference in Las Vegas. His session, “HR Analytics from Scratch: 8 Lessons Learned in the First Year,” provided valuable insight into what it takes to build HR analytic competency from scratch. His mission is to share with others what he wishes he’d known when he started bui

Starting data governance initiatives can seem a bit daunting. You’re establishing strategies and policies for data assets. And, you’re committing the organization to treat data as a corporate asset, on par with its buildings, its supply chain, its employees or its intellectual property. However, as Jill Dyché and Evan Levy have noted, data governance is a combination of strategy and execution. It’s an approach that requires one to be both holistic and pragmatic: • Holistic. All aspects of data usage and maintenance are taken into account in establishing the vision. • Pragmatic. Political challenges and cross-departmental struggles are part of the equation. So, the tactical deployment must be delivered in phases to provide quick “wins” and avert organizational fatigue from a larger, more monolithic exercise. To accomplish this, data governance must touch all internal and external IT systems and establish decision-making mechanisms that transcend organizational silos. And, it must provi
