The age of the customer. Possibly no term better illustrates the current era of business. Customers expect their experience to be flawless at every touchpoint, and with competitors only a click (or tap) away, company leaders have a strong incentive to deliver. Online retailers have set a high standard in the way that they engage customers on an ongoing basis—not just during the commercial transaction, but before, during and after each interaction with the customer. Can service providers in industries such as banking, insurance, healthcare and government meet the challenge?

Today's datacenter networks must better adapt to and accommodate business-critical application workloads. Datacenters will have to increasingly adapt to virtualized workloads and to the ongoing enterprise transition to private and hybrid clouds. Pressure will mount on datacenters not only to provide increased bandwidth for 3rd Platform applications such as cloud and data analytics but also to deliver the agility and dynamism necessary to accommodate shifting traffic patterns (with more east-west traffic associated with server-to-server flows, as opposed to the traditional north-south traffic associated with client/server computing). Private cloud and legacy applications will also drive daunting bandwidth and connectivity requirements. This Technology Spotlight examines the increasing bandwidth requirements in enterprise datacenters, driven by both new and old application workloads, cloud and noncloud in nature. Cybercrime is more sophisticated and dangerous than ever before, and the scope of newly emerging threats is unprecedented. At the same time, the growing number and diversity of endpoints in the enterprise is expanding the network edge to the point of disappearing. Both these trends will continue with ongoing bring your-own-device (BYOD) initiatives and explode with the emerging Internet of Things (IoT).

Today, it’s unlikely that a single database will meet all your needs. For a variety of reasons—including the need to support cloud-scale solutions and increasingly dynamic app ecosystems—startups and enterprises alike are embracing a wide variety of open source databases. These varied databases—including MongoDB, Redis and PostgreSQL— open doors to building sophisticated and scalable applications on battle-hardened, non-proprietary databases.

Modern enterprises are doing their best to address three simultaneous and closely interrelated objectives related to their information technology/infrastructure: To identify and assess security-related risks, and manage them to an acceptable level To achieve, sustain, and demonstrate compliance with policies and regulatory requirements To improve the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of ongoing operations, e.g., to provide greater flexibility and scale at lower total annual cost For several years now, Aberdeen Group has referred to this trifecta of strategic objectives as the quest for enterprise computing infrastructure to be secure, compliant, and well-managed.

Despite heavy, long-term investments in data management, data problems at many organizations continue to grow. One reason is that data has traditionally been perceived as just one aspect of a technology project; it has not been treated as a corporate asset. Consequently, the belief was that traditional application and database planning efforts were sufficient to address ongoing data issues. As our corporate data stores have grown in both size and subject area diversity, it has become clear that a strategy to address data is necessary. Yet some still struggle with the idea that corporate data needs a comprehensive strategy. There’s no shortage of blue-sky thinking when it comes to organizations’ strategic plans and road maps. To many, such efforts are just a novelty. Indeed, organizations’ strategic plans often generate very few tangible results for organizations – only lots of meetings and documentation. A successful plan, on the other hand, will identify realistic goals along with a r

Buy-and-hold strategies can actually add costs to the datacenter, as systems age in place. Not only do hardware maintenance and software maintenance fees rise, over time – but the aging of applications also costs the organization money. Investing in a transition from POWER5 to POWER7 resulted in a return on investment (ROI) of more than 150 percent over three years. An insightful and and compelling discussion by IDC that reviews the primary reason for maintaining current systems -- Return on Investment. IDC studied IBM Power Systems sites that remained on the POWER5 platform long after its initial introduction in 2004. When comparisons to the succeeding generation of POWER7 are made, customers have found that the increase in scalability and performance of POWER7 systems, combined with a reduction in server "footprint" size and overall electrical requirements, resulted in significant reductions in ongoing costs, or opex, per 100 end users supported.

People, machines, data, processes are more connected than ever before, in more ways, and at a pace not previously envisioned. Because of this, the means of user interaction are evolving rapidly, and the outcome is an explosion of information increasing at epic rates. Both the opportunity and the challenge for an organization is to execute a strategy to most effectively participate in, exploit and derive ongoing value from the expansive digital world. To evaluate and ultimately better facilitate this, many organizations are specifically defining a digital strategy as part of their overall general business strategy. Central to that digital strategy is the digital experience.
