Data centers are large, important investments that, when properly designed, built, and operated, are an integral part of the business strategy driving the success of any enterprise. Yet the central focus of organizations is often the acquisition and deployment of the IT architecture equipment and systems with little thought given to the structure and space in which it is to be housed, serviced, and maintained. This invariably leads to facility infrastructure problems such as thermal “hot spots”, lack of UPS (uninterruptible power supply) rack power, lack of redundancy, system overloading and other issues that threaten or prevent the realization of the return on the investment in the IT systems.

The recent release of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) study on data center energy efficiency is adding fuel to the fire in the research and development of new ways to reduce energy use in centers. The findings, summarized on the EPA website, are staggering: Data centers consumed about 60 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) in 2006, roughly 1.5 percent of total US electricity consumption -Energy consumption of servers and data centers has doubled in the past five years and is expected to almost double again in the next five years to more than 100 billion kWh, costing about $7.4 billion annually.

Every three years, members of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) meet to review, modify and add new National Electrical Code (NEC), or NFPA 70, requirements to enhance electrical safety in the workplace and the home. This year’s code review is well underway: the second draft of NEC 2020 is complete and the annual NFPA Conference and Expo is scheduled for late June. What follows is a preview of what are, in my opinion, the most significant code changes on track to pass. In this blog, I’ll explore the reasoning for each change and the future steps the NEC may take beyond 2020 regarding: Ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) protection Service entrance equipment Reconditioned equipment Performance testing Load calculations Available fault current and temporary power This is a high-level overview. In the coming months, my Eaton colleagues and I will dig deeper into each topic as part of a continuing series on the 2020 code review cycle.

Open Compute has had a significant impact on the thinking about data center design. Until now, the focus has been on systems at the rack level, leaving unanswered questions about the power infrastructure upstream of the rack. In this paper, we address critical questions about the implications of Open Compute on the upstream power infrastructure, including redundancy, availability, and flexibility. We introduce simplified reference designs that support OCP and provide a capital cost analysis to compare traditional and OCP-based designs. We also present an online TradeOff Tool that allows data center decision makers to better understand the cost differences and cost drivers to various architectures.
