Cooling tends to take a back seat to other concerns when server rooms and small to mid-size data centers are first built. As computing needs grow, increased heat production can compromise equipment performance and cause shutdowns. Haphazard data center expansion creates cooling inefficiencies that magnify these heat-related problems. Users may assume that they need to increase cooling capacity, but this is expensive and often unnecessary. In most cases, low-cost rack cooling best practices will solve heat-related problems. Best practices optimize airflow, increase efficiency, prevent downtime and reduce costs.

Data Intensity is an enterprise cloud services provider focusing on Oracle applications. Founded in 2001, it currently has 240 employees and operates two data centers with about 1,200 virtual servers. They needed a flexible storage platform to handle growth of individual customer applications, such as Oracle ERP, with minimal downtime with low operating costs. Testing included storage systems from five different vendors to find a solution that was easy to administer and provides thin provisioning, snapshots, and rapid provisioning.

Email has been a mission-critical application for years and at the heart of organizations' communications and business practices. From an architecture perspective, email has frequently been walled off, sitting on separate servers and using separate back-end storage systems. With advances in server hardware and the rise of virtualization, this appears to be changing. Read this Forrester Consulting paper to learn the key considerations for what will work best within your email environment to improve storage management and/or lower storage costs in your firm.

Buy-and-hold strategies can actually add costs to the datacenter, as systems age in place. Not only do hardware maintenance and software maintenance fees rise, over time – but the aging of applications also costs the organization money. Investing in a transition from POWER5 to POWER7 resulted in a return on investment (ROI) of more than 150 percent over three years. An insightful and and compelling discussion by IDC that reviews the primary reason for maintaining current systems -- Return on Investment.
