The need for reliable data centers is growing, especially in the small to medium sized business market.  So too is the price of data centers -- both in terms of initial cost and Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) -- as equipment, service and utility costs continue to escalate.  How is a data center manager going to support an IT-based business strategy that hinges on high availability, at a reasonable business cost?  Insource? Outsource? Build? Lease? This presentation looks at the factors driving data centers costs, their impact, how they can be controlled, and how to justify the data center you need.

Once upon a time, several generations ago (in technology years), IT departments were internal departments, focused on maintaining infrastructure and services within the company. Some companies may have had external-facing services, particularly web services, but this was still generally a narrow and restricted area. IT wasn’t a revenue-generating or strategic department; it was a supporting environment viewed as a cost center. One of the outcomes of an infrastructure-focused environment is that developers lost a sense of what their code was doing. Release cycles were long, and changes were slow. A developer would work on something and throw the code into testing or operations, and it would be released months later. Because of that long lead time, engineers lost the joy of being a developer—of creating something and seeing it work in real life. One of the great, powerful changes with digital transformation and related cultural and technology changes like DevOps is that it reintroduce

Microsoft commissioned Forrester Consulting to conduct a Total Economic Impact™ (TEI) study to examine the potential return on investment (ROI) enterprises may realize by shifting some or all their management and operations from on-premises, hosted, and outsourced implementations to Azure’s infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) offering. Organizations are adopting cloud computing to accelerate service delivery. Some try to deliver cloud economies of scale in their private data centers with the mantra “automate everything,” a philosophy often simpler in theory than practice. Others have opted to leverage public cloud resources for the added benefit of the pay-as-you-go model, but are finding it difficult to keep costs in check. Regardless of approach, cloud technology poses the same challenge IT has faced for decades: how to assure application performance while minimizing costs.

Read this report to understand how the age of the customer requires tech management to transform into a customer-facing function in speci?c ways. Business technology (BT) brings together technology and traditionally customer-facing roles like marketing, sales, service, brand/product management, and ful?llment for the purpose of deploying systems of engagement that provide di?erential customer experience. Firms must build these systems of engagement from the outside in, according to how customers move in market spaces. The rules for planning, building, and running systems of engagement are not the same as for previous generations of tech management because customers are not employees. The increasingly crucial role that digital technologies play in customer engagement elevates the CIO role in business — if CIOs can move beyond the traditional IT focus on technology assets and adopt an expanded view that centers on customer experience and choice

Technology has become the heart and soul of every business. The hardware boundaries of IT have exploded beyond data centers, with mobile devices in the hands of both employees and customers alike. Application options have blossomed, from traditional to open source to software-as-a-service. Business has become global, bringing with it a demand for round-the-clock agility. Employees expect that the applications they use at work should be as easy to use the Web apps they use at home. Integration remains difficult, because it's sometimes impossible to know what will happen when someone tries to pluck one strand out of the pile. IT workload and system complexity will only get more challenging, bringing the need for disintermediation through service automation.

The world of IT is undergoing a digital transformation. Applications are growing fast, and so are the users consuming them. These applications are everywhere—in the datacenter, on virtual and/or microservices platforms, in the cloud, and as SaaS. More and more apps are now being moved out of datacenters to a cloud-based infrastructure. In order for an optimized and secure delivery of these applications, IT needs specific network appliances called Application Delivery Controllers (ADCs). These ADCs come in hardware, virtual, and containerized form factors, and are sized by Network Administrators based on the current and future usage of applications. The challenge with this is that it’s hard to foresee sizing or scalability requirements for these ADCs since users are constantly increasing, and applications are consistently evolving, as well as moving out of datacenters. Complicating matters, most ADCs are fixed-capacity network appliances that provide zero or minimum expansion capability
