Cisco made Application Policy Infrastructure Controller Enterprise Module (APIC-EM) generally available on November 3rd, 2015. It is an SDN controller that supports apps that make WAN and access networks easier to deploy and manage. Cisco’s focus on a low-risk, incremental approach to adopting SDN will appeal to its user-base. Cisco needs to describe the policy control capabilities benefits of APIC-EM, and also highlight its power as a platform and its ability to distinguish apps from point solution offerings from many other companies with competitive features.

The reality is that instead of looking to replicate the public cloud experience, privately, we often run in to people that want to fiddle with every aspect of the infrastructure and OpenStack® itself. Companies start off looking for a public cloud experience, but quickly become more interested in the choice of hypervisor, network models and storage architecture -- none of which are even up for discussion in a public cloud. Just as the plumbing in a large stadium or high rise has to be designed for scale, purpose, redundancy, protection from tampering or denial of operation, and the capacity to handle peak loads, the network requires similar consideration. As users depend on the network to access the majority of the information they need to do their jobs and to transport their voice or video with reliability, the network must be able to provide resilient, intelligent transport.
