The concept of artificial intelligence (AI) has been with us since the term was coined for the Dartmouth Summer Research Project on Artificial Intelligence in 1956. Today, while general AI strives for full cognitive abilities, there is a narrower scope—this better-defined AI is the domain of machine learning (ML) and other algorithm-driven solutions where cybersecurity has embraced AI. SANS recently conducted a survey of professionals working or active in cybersecurity, and involved with or interested in the use of AI for improving the security posture of their organization. Read their report to learn their survey findings, conclusions, and recommended considerations.

There is now broad consensus among security professionals that artificial intelligence (AI) technologies can play an important role in reducing cyber risks. Exactly what that role is, however, and how it will evolve over time remains unclear for respondents to a new SANS Institute research study sponsored by BlackBerry Cylance. Opinions varied about the maturity of AI, its benefits and risks, and the baseline requirements for an AI-enabled security solution. Download the report today for the complete survey results and learn: 1) How perceptions of AI vary across industry sectors and organizational roles and responsibilities; 2) How AI technologies compare and contrast with human intelligence; 3) How machine learning is driving advances in the field; 4) What respondents believe to be the greatest risks and benefits of AI; and, 5) The most significant barriers to broader AI adoption.

How to navigate a crowded vendor landscape and find the best endpoint protection solution According to the 2018 SANS Endpoint Security Survey, more than 80 percent of known breaches involve an endpoint. That’s why finding the most effective endpoint protection has never been more important. Unfortunately, with hundreds of options on the market, all claiming the same “next-gen” features, choosing the best endpoint security for your organization can be challenging. Read the Endpoint Protection Buyers Guide to learn: • Why you should ensure that the solution you choose includes these five key elements: prevention (NGAV), detection (EDR), managed threat hunting (MDR), threat intelligence, and IT hygiene and vulnerability assessment • Details on the role each of these elements plays in ensuring your organization’s security • The evaluation criteria you should apply and questions to ask to ensure a solution is truly effective • How the cloud-native CrowdStrike Falcon® next-gen endpoint prote

Collaboration services, email, managed services, and backups and disaster recovery are the most common current use cases for cloud services, according to the results of a new SANS survey on cloud security. The 485 IT professionals who participated in the survey reported using a variety of cloud providers and service models, including software-as-aservice (SaaS) cloud offerings, along with a fairly even mix of infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) and platform-as-a-service (PaaS) implementations. Most respondents said they are investing in both public and private clouds as needs dictate.

IT endpoint management used to be an easier game: Managers deployed user systems with custom images when employees were hired, and employees returned them on their last day at work. Even during deployment, users had minimal abilities to impact systems and devices that were centrally managed. Servers resided in physical data centers where they could be identified and accessed. Those were the days!

The perimeter continues to dissolve, and the definition of endpoint is evolving, according to results of the SANS 2016 Endpoint Security Survey, now in its third year. As we might expect, 90% or more consider desktops, servers, routers, firewalls and printers to be endpoints that need to be protected. After that, respondents include other less-typical devices in their definition of endpoints that warrant protection: 71% include building security (access/ surveillance), 59% include employee-owned mobile devices and 40% consider industrial control systems as endpoints that need to be protected. Some respondents also consider POS devices, smart cars, emulated endpoints in the cloud and wearables as endpoints needing protection, highlighting the diversity of thinking among respondents.

The relentless march of end user organizations toward cloud services continued during the past 12 months, according to a new SANS survey, despite long-standing fears about information security, the lack of visibility into cloud provider security controls and the shortcomings of controls available to those who utilize cloud services. One big difference since the 2015 SANS cloud security survey:1 Information security professionals appear to have accepted that the cloud is here to stay and are, sometimes unenthusiastically, doing what they can to make the frontier secure.

SANS conducted this survey to explore how organizations are handling prevention. Breaking down possible preventive measures into four major categories or domains (business, architectural design and development, operational, and technology), the survey sought to answer three major questions: 1. What measures have respondents implemented that they believe will prevent breaches? 2. What measures not necessarily implemented do respondents consider preventive? 3. What barriers have stopped respondents from doing what they should be doing?

Health care is often considered a lucrative business for those involved in waste, fraud and abuse. Today’s ever-accelerating technology changes make data related to health care, medical and financial issues even more attractive (and profitable) to cybercriminals who sell medical identities and siphon money from stolen financial records. Risks are exponentially increased because of organizations’ reliance on electronic systems for mission-critical functions. According to 61% of respondents to the SANS 2014 State of Cybersecurity in Health Care Organizations survey, medical/health record systems are considered the most at-risk information asset among the 224 health care-related organizations represented in the survey.
